What does ATEX means?

This term is the abbreviation for “ATmosphère EXplosive.” It refers to both a physical hazard on the ground and a strict regulatory framework in Europe. Indeed, the regulation is based on two major European directives:

• Directive 2014/34/EU (ATEX 114):  

It is aimed at manufacturers and applies to protective equipment and systems intended for use in hazardous areas.

• Directive 1999/92/EC (ATEX 153):  

It defines employers' obligations for the protection of workers exposed to explosion hazards.

What to remember

What are ATEX certifications and international standards?

To operate in the global market, it is essential to understand that certifications vary by geographic region.

ATEX Certification (Europe)

It is mandatory on the European market. The “CE” marking accompanied by the hexagonal logo certifies that the equipment meets the essential safety requirements of Directive 2014/34/EU. Furthermore, by issuing an EC declaration for the product groups specified in ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU, CENTREXPERT confirms, under its own responsibility, its conformity with all the requirements of the ATEX Directive.

IECEx (International)

The IECEx system is a global certification scheme that aims to facilitate international trade in equipment intended for Ex zones. Unlike ATEX, which is a legal requirement in Europe, IECEx is based on international standards (IEC). Thus, it allows for mutual recognition of test reports between member countries.

Inmetro (Brazil): Mandatory Certification for Ex Electrical Equipment.
KC Mark/KOSHA (South Korea): Safety requirements for the South Korean market.
TIIS (Japan): Validation by the Japan Institute of Industrial Technology and Safety.
UKCA/UKEx (United Kingdom): New mandatory marking post-Brexit.
ANZEx (Australia / New Zealand): Oceania region-specific certification system.
NEC500/505 (North America): Using the «Divisions» (NEC500) or «Zones» (NEC505) system in the USA and Canada.
EAC Ex (Russia / Eurasian Union): Compliance with Customs Union Technical Regulations.
Weight (India): Approval by the Indian Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation.
